The Forgotten War, Victims, Victors and Mere Survivors (VIDEO)

Posted on | juli 2, 2012 | No Comments

This footage tells the story of the Binnenlandse Oorlog 1986-1992 in Suriname, a war fought in the East of Suriname, a war with more than 10,000 casualties and fatalities, on either side, The Surinamese Army, Jungle Commando, Indigenous and Marrons.

When I posted this movie on FACEBOOK more than a week ago, many people posted that they did not know of this movie, of these people and about the situation. Striking are the stories of the interviewed, the people whose village was burned down to the ground, the people forced to flee to French Guiana, the combatants, former soldiers still fighting the demons of war, traumatized, living on the fringes of society. The issue of 30,000 refugees, how the French Government dealt with this situation. The Surinamese governments on the other hand, have yet to come up with a suitable solution for the refugees or as they are being referred to by people in Paramaribo, squatters.

The movie also showcases the people that survived this war, the ones that overcame, the ones that try to negotiate their fears and their will to make something off of life. The ones that work to empower the youth, forging a corridor between the past, traditions and the future.
