The official website of the Iranian judiciary in Fars Province, reported that two of the prisoners were hanged publicly in different squares of Shiraz, while the three others were hanged inside Adelabad prison.

According to the report the prisoners were identified as “A. P.” convicted of carrying 185 kilograms of heroin and 72 kilograms of crack, “A. K.” convicted of participation in selling 39 kilos and 800 grams of opium and carrying 9 kilos and 960 grams of opium, “M. A.” convicted og carrying 4 kilograms of heroin, “A. S.” convicted og keeping and selling 29 kilograms of Marijuana and more than 14 kilograms of opium, and “A. Z.” convicted of keeping 2 kilograms of heroin.

Age and gender of the prisoners was not specified in the report.

According to Iran Human Rights’ annual report on the death penalty in 2011, more than 80% of those executed in Iran were charged with drug-related crimes, while only 9% of them were identified by their full names.

One prisoner hanged in Western Iran

According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, one prisoner was hanged in the prison of Doroud, Lorestan Province (West of Iran). The prisoner who was not identified by name, was convicted keeping 9 kilos and 618 grams of heroin, said the report.

Three prisoners were hanged in Northern Iran

According to the official website of the Iranian judiciary in Semnan province (Northern Iran), three prisoners were hanged in the prison of Shahrud early this morning, Thursday September 20.

The prisoners were identified as “M.M.”, “A. M.” and “M. R.” and convicted of “keeping and carrying large amounts of the narcotic substance crack”, said the report.

At least two prisoners were hanged in Urmia (Northwestern Iran)

According to the unofficial Kurdish news agency Kurdpa, sex prisoners were hanged in the prison of Urmia early this morning September 20. Execution of two of the prisoners has been confirmed by another independent source. These prisoners are identified as “Hashem Jahangiri” and “Iraj Deylami”, both charges with drug-related offences.

Sadegh Moradi had previously been exonerated from the rape charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison. But, the decision was met with protests and the case was sent to the Supreme Court where the death sentence was reinstated.

Prior to the execution, Sadegh Moradi’s brother told reporters that the family had been unable to meet with Sadegh in more than a month , and despite waiting outside Evin Prison until 2:00am last night, they were not permitted to meet with him for the last time.

According to eye witnesses and various other reports, before he was executed Sadegh Moradi said: “I am innocent.” He was hanged at 6:06am at Sabalan Square in Tehran.

Another man was hanged in public in Shahroud, northern Iran, yesterday.

In a previous statement Iran Human Rights (IHR) had condemned public executions. The spokesperson for IHR, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, called public hangings “barbaric punishments meant to spread fear among the people and promote a culture of violence in society.”

According to the official website of the Iranian Judiciary in the province of Semnan, one man was hanged publicly in Shahroud today, Monday September 10. According to the report, the man, 35, identified as “H. A”, was convicted of sodomy and rape.

Iranian news agencies reported that a man, identified as Sadegh Moradi, will be hanged in public in Tehran on September 11. According to the reports, Moradi— also known by the Iranian media as “Black Scorpion”— is convicted of the kidnapping and rape of 30 women.

Iran Human Rights (IHR) recently warned the international community that the number of executions in Iran may increase in September. According to official and unofficial reports, at least 17 people have been executed so far in September.

The number of public executions in Iran has increased dramatically in the past three years. It is believed that the Iranian authorities use the death penalty as an instrument to spread fear among the people.

The report didn’t mention what charges these prisoners were convicted of.The eleven executions have also been confirmed by a second unofficial source. Official Iranian sources have not yet announced these executions. Iran Human Rights warned earlier about a new wave of executions in September. A political prisoner identified as Gholamreza Khosravi is scheduled to be executed in the coming days.

One man was hanged publicly in Shiraz:

One prisoner was hanged publicly in the city of Shiraz (Fars Province, southern Iran) this morning, reported the official web site of the Iranian judiciary in the Fars Province.

The prisoner was identified as “A. T.” and was convicted of kindapping and rape according to the report.

Fars Province was on the top of the list of the provinces with public executions in 2011 and is normally among the provinces with the highest number of public executions in Iran.

One prisoner was hanged in Zahedan:

One prisoner was hanged in the central prisoner of Zahedan early this morning reported the official web site of the Iranian judiciary in Sistan-Baluchestan province. The prisoner who was not identified by name was convicted of murdering “Gholamhossein Jafari”, a revolutionary guard member and the commander of the security forces in Iranshahr (the second largest city of the province of Baluchestan).

According to the Mehr news agency one of the prisoners was convicted of drug trafficking while the other prisoner was convicted of rape. The prisoners were hanged in Davoudieh square of this city in fron of several hundred people.

At least 12 people have been hanged publicly in June 2012 in Iran.

Three of the United Nation’s Special Rapporteurs published earlier today a statement condemning the executions in Iran. The statement also underscored the high number of public executions in Iran saying: ” “Executions in public add to the already cruel, inhuman and degrading nature of the death penalty and can only have a dehumanizing effect on the victim and a brutalizing effect on those who witness the execution”.

The 8 executions take place only one day after the EU expressed concern about what they calles “the alarming increase in the use of death penalty” and asked Iran to “introduce a moratorium on executions”

Eight prisoners were executed in northwestern Iran:

According to the Kurdish “Mukrian News Agency” seven prisoners were hanged in the prison of Urmia (northwestern Iran). The report which was quoting Mr. Masoud Shamsnejad, the lawyer of one of those executed, all the prisoners were convicted of drug-related charges. The prisoners were identified as: Allahvordi A., Sayyad A., Safar P., Haji P., Khosro D., Nahad N., Omran G., and Abdolmajid M.

At least one prisoner was executed in Tehran today:

According to the website of “Human rights and democracy activists in Iran” (HRDAI) several prisoners were hanged in Tehran’s Evin prison this morning. One of the prisoners is identified as “Kourosh Zarini” who according to the report was involved in the uprising and clashes between the guards and prisoners in the Ghezel Hesar prison two years ago. More than 40 prisoners were killed under these clashes.

According to the official and unofficial reports from Iran at least 78 prisoners have been executed in May 2012 in Iran.

Yesterday EU expressed concern about the alarming increase in the use of death penalty in Iran.

According to Reuters the European Union criticized Iran on Wednesday for an “alarming” increase in the use of the death penalty this year, calling on Tehran to introduce a moratorium on executions.

“According to the latest data, compiled from a number of sources, the rate of executions in Iran during the first 5 months of 2012 confirmed the country as one of the world’s leading users of the death penalty,” a spokesman for the EU’s foreign policy chief said.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is “deeply concerned by the alarming increase”, the spokesman said.
