LIW publiceert het rapport ‘The Dark Sites Of Granite’ waarop dagblad Trouw zijn artikel ‘Nederlandse bedrijven verkopen graniet uit mijnen waar kinderarbeid voorkomt’ publiceert.

NL-Aid stuurt LIW en de journalist van dagblad Trouw een e-mail dat de berichtgeving verder onderzocht dient te worden omdat het rapport niet wetenschappelijk is geschreven en dientengevolge de beweringen niet aannemelijk zijn. Overigens heeft NL-Aid door de jaren heen LIW op de hoogte gebracht van fake-kinderarbeid maar daar is nimmer gehoor op gegeven. Dat is vreemd als je aan waarheidsvinding doet.

NL-Aid publiceert het artikel ‘De Landelijke India Werkgroep verzint kinderarbeid’. Daarin staat o.a. dat natuursteenbedrijf Antolini Luigi LIW zal vervolgen wegens het publiceren van ‘valse en misleidende informatie’.

NL-Aid schrijft de bevindingen naar de inspectiedienst van ontwikkelingssamenwerking, de Directie Internationaal Onderzoek en Beleidsevaluatie (IOB).

LIW buigt want ze publiceren hun eerste rectificatie waarin Antolini Luigi en Edwards Slate & Stone worden gevrijwaard van de verkoop van producten gemaakt middels kinderarbeid. Overigens is de rectificatie na een paar weken zo verstopt op de site van LIW dat het lastig is om deze te traceren. Sterker nog, LIW heeft een aparte link met nieuwsarchief en de rectificatie wordt daar niet vermeld.

De IOB schrijft aan NL-Aid dat LIW zelf de verantwoordelijkheid voor de kwaliteit en betrouwbaarheid van hun onderzoeken, publicaties en media-uitingen moeten dragen. De IOB heeft als primaire taak om het beleid van Minbuza te evalueren en richten zich daarmee op publiekrechtelijke gebied, niet op het privaatrechtelijke gebied. LIW is geen overheid. Het blijft vreemd dat stichtingen die volledig van belastinggelden afhankelijk zijn en niet onder de ‘Wet Openbaarheid Van Bestuur’ (WOB) vallen, niet langs een meetlat gelegd worden. Waar gaat dit dan mis? Om tot bestuursorgaan te worden aangemerkt waardoor de WOB en de IOB een rol kunnen spelen moet een goededoelenstichting aan drie toetsstenen voldoen:

1. Het gaat om subsidie, uitkeringen of andere op geld waardeerbare rechten, en de rechtspersoon fungeert als een soort doorgeefluik tussen overheid en burger;
2. De overheid verschaft het geld waarmee de rechtspersoon de op geld waardeerbare rechten in overwegende mate, in beginsel voor ten minste twee derden;
3. De overheid bepaalt de criteria volgens welke de subsidies of uitkeringen worden verdeeld in beslissende mate.

Op het laatste punt gaat het mis. Goededoelenstichtingen stellen de toekenningscriteria vast. Dus niet wie betaalt, maar wie bepaalt geeft in dit geval de juridische doorslag. Kortom, LIW heeft vrij spel waarbij niemand zich bekommert om waarheidsvinding.

NL-Aid mailt de genoemde Tweede Kamerleden, te weten Sazias en Van Brenk (beiden 50PLUS), Hijink (SP), Voordewind (ChristenUnie), Van den Hul (PvdA) en Diks (Groenlinks), om alle bevindingen te delen en om een reactie te vragen. Zelfs na een reminder ontving NL-Aid geen reactie.

Gerard Oonk van LIW stuurt een mail naar NL-Aid. Deze is interessant want hij doet een poging tot waarheidsvinding. De cursieve gedeeltes zijn geschreven door Oonk. Er staat niet één wetenschappelijke logica in dat zich een ‘bewijs’ mag noemen. Lees mee want dit is waarheidsvinding van het ontwikkelingssamenwerkingfront dat door de IOB, de SER, de Tweede Kamerleden en dagblad Trouw wordt getolereerd.

‘Voor de totstandkoming van het rapport ‘The Dark Sites of Granite’ hebben wij samengewerkt met het Indiase Glocal Research. Glocal Research is een gerenommeerde onderzoeksorganisatie die bijvoorbeeld ook onderzoek uitvoert voor duurzaamheidsinitiatieven waarbij verschillende multinationale bedrijven zijn aangesloten. Diverse van onze eerdere rapporten over de omvangrijke kinderarbeid in de zadensector worden door bedrijven als zeer betrouwbaar beschouwd. Zij baseren mede daarop hun plannen om het probleem aan te pakken.’

‘Uw suggestie dat de Landelijke India Werkgroep kinderarbeid zou verzinnen voor eigen gewin is vanzelfsprekend onjuist.’

Zolang beweringen niet aan de wetenschappelijke wetten voldoen, zijn de beweringen wetenschappelijk gezien ONWAAR en dientengevolge verzonnen.

‘Dit is ook niet te verenigen met het feit dat wij in het rapport aangeven dat incidentele gevallen van kinderarbeid in granietgroeven zijn aangetroffen, maar dat kinderarbeid in Zuid Indiase granietgroeven de afgelopen jaren is afgenomen.’

Dit dien je aantoonbaar te maken maar indien je kinderarbeid hebt aangetroffen tijdens een aangekondigde audit, dan is deze kinderarbeid niks waard. Dan is de kans aanwezig dat dit op voorhand in scène is gezet. En wat is incidenteel? Heb je drie kinderen gevonden tijdens 100 audits? Anders? Waren deze audits aangekondigd? Wat waren die kinderen aan het doen dat je dit als kinderarbeid bestempeld?

‘De Landelijke India Werkgroep volgt een strikte procedure van hoor en wederhoor en geeft bedrijven daarmee de gelegenheid te reageren op bevindingen die rechtstreeks met hen verband houden, voorafgaand aan publicatie.’

Dit is vreemd want ik verneem van de natuursteenbedrijven dat zij niet te horen krijgen in welke groeves kinderen zijn gevonden zodat zij niet in staat zijn om een antithese te vormen. Op deze manier wordt het door hun strot geduwd want er is geen verdediging mogelijk. Je zegt hiermee: ‘jij hebt het gedaan? Wat heb ik gedaan? Dat zeg ik niet, maar jij hebt het gedaan.’

‘Gezien de gevoeligheid van de informatie die u opvraagt kunnen wij deze niet verstrekken.’

Dit is een misvatting. Je kunt namelijk bijvoorbeeld zeggen dat bij ngo X op adres Y een lijst ligt met gegevens van gevonden kinderen zodat andere onderzoekers/journalisten dit kunnen hergebruiken. Ze kunnen controleren of de lijst bestaat en ze kunnen de inhoud controleren door middels een steekproef enkele kinderen op te zoeken ten bate van waarheidsvinding. Dit gebeurt in geen enkel rapport van LIW. Kortom, je dient een spoor na te laten. De Code voor Journalistiek zegt dat je feiten controleerbaar dient te maken (regel 5, kopje ‘waarheidsgetrouw’). In het Engels ook wel: SPJ Code Of Ethics. Dit hoort dan ook thuis bij sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek doen. LIW schrijft rapportages en persberichten maar ze zijn geen journalistieke organisatie. Dan krijg je deze fouten. De zinsnede van Gerard Oonk zegt eigenlijk dat je alles zomaar zonder bewijs kunt verklaren en dat gevoelige onderwerpen geen bewijs nodig hebben. Geen enkele advocaat heeft op basis van deze redenatie een rechtszaak in de vrije westerse wereld gewonnen. Stel dat de volgende passage zou worden gepubliceerd (voor alle duidelijkheid, het betreft een gedachte-experiment en deze is dus fictief): ‘Bij LIW werken onder streng regime van Gerard Oonk in het geheim al decennia lang kinderen die jonger zijn dan 12 jaar oud. Zij moeten urenlang op de grond flyers vouwen. Er is geen bewijs want dit ligt te gevoelig en kan derhalve niet worden verstrekt. Echter, dit hoeft ook niet want de media en politici geloven het toch‘. Dit is toch ook geen wetenschap bedrijven maar een geval van manipuleren en indoctrineren. Kortom, een bewijs MOET ergens toegankelijk zijn. Derhalve heeft LIW de plicht om accuraat mee te delen over welk bewijs het gaat, waar het gearchiveerd ligt en onder welke condities je het kunt inzien. Zonder dit zijn alle beweringen holle frasen, ontbreekt elke wetenschappelijk onderbouwing en is mijn cursieve zin van hierboven evenzo ‘waar’. De SPJ Code Of Ethics: ‘Identify sources clearly. The public is entitled to as much information as possible to judge the reliability and motivations of sources‘. Bewijzen in de categorie ‘van horen zeggen’ waar LIW mee schermt, doorstaat geen enkele wetenschappelijke proeve.

‘Verder verwijzen wij u graag naar de methode-paragraaf in het rapport.’

Dit is het grootste probleem. De methodeparagraaf heeft de spanwijdte van een hbo-scriptie. 80% van het rapport zou hier over dienen te gaan waarin je uitlegt hoe je alle mogelijke onvolkomenheden neutraliseert.

Gerard Oonk plaatst zijn in zijn e-mail de desbetreffende onderzoekers van ‘The Dark Sites Of Granite’ in Cc:// omdat ik in een eerder stadium hen persoonlijk de simpele vraag heb gesteld of ze daadwerkelijk kinderarbeid hadden gezien (onderzoeker D.H. van LIW en H.P. van het FNV – onthoud u de eerste naam want deze komt terug). De onderzoeker hebben mijn vraag nimmer beantwoord. Dit is meer dan verdacht. Dit is hetzelfde als ik aan een onderzoeker vraag of hij wel degelijk vluchtelingen in het vluchtelingenkamp heeft gespot en dat de onderzoeker niet schrijft dat hij vele vluchtelingen heeft gezien, maar een verhaal aflevert dat het vluchtelingenkamp onderdeel is van een omvangrijke en gerenommeerde netwerkorganisatie die vervolgens bij niemand bekend is.

In het rapport ‘Do leather workers matter?’ van maart 2017 worden 73 multinationals genoemd. Op pagina 5 van het rapport worden ze in één naam genoemd met de Indiase leerindustrie en uitbuiting waaronder kinderarbeid. Tijdens het onderzoek is gebruik gemaakt van literatuurrecherche en interviews. Er is geen daadwerkelijke uitbuiting waaronder kinderarbeid aangetroffen. De neutraliteit van de interviews wordt niet wetenschappelijk onderbouwd. Er worden geen verklaringen gegeven voor een correlatie met 73 modebedrijven.

Modebedrijf LLOYD schrijft aan NL-Aid: ‘Neither in the past nor currently, there has been any suspicious fact regarding child labour at the production facilities of our partners. Moreover, from the report we did not notice any reason as to why LLOYD should be involved into child labour. The report just mentions LLOYD as a company exporting leather goods from India what is a matter of fact.’

Lijkt me niet reëel dat de wazige interviews van LIW  de 10.000 jaarlijkse audits op inhoud kunnen tegenspreken. De interviews zijn overigens nergens in zijn volledigheid opgeschreven. Het begint overduidelijk te worden dat LIW op een amateuristische manier op wereldniveau een rol wil spelen en zolang overheden en ministers rapporten als ‘The Dark Sites Of Granite’ zonder een wetenschappelijk kritische blik bekijken, zal deze relatie blijven bestaan.

Terug naar rapport ‘Do leather workers matter?’. De namen van 73 multinationals op pagina 5 zijn daar eigenlijk niets aan het doen. Toch staan ze daar…ingebed in een verhaal over uitbuiting en kinderarbeid. Ik zou graag de rapporten van Massimo Dutti willen lezen. Zal me niet verbazen dat het niet bij LIW en de genoemde overheidsorganen het is opgekomen om deze als tegenwicht op te vragen.

De SER steekt de kop in het zand. De communicatieadviseur van de SER schrijft aan NL-Aid: ‘De SER begeleidt het proces van de Nederlandse natuursteensector, de overheid, vakbond FNV en enkele (coalities van) NGO’s om in de komende maanden te werken aan een convenant dat ertoe moet leiden dat sociale- en milieuomstandigheden in productielanden worden aangepakt en verbeterd. De door Nederland onderschreven OESO-richtlijnen voor multinationale ondernemingen en de principes van de VN inzake bedrijven en mensenrechten geven de normen waaraan het gedrag van bedrijven moet voldoen.’

Er wordt niet ingegaan op de kritiek ten aanzien van waarheidsvinding door LIW. De reactie van de SER lijkt op die van LIW: claimen dat alles onderdeel is van iets groots, iets macro’s, waardoor de waarheidsvinding op microniveau er totaal niet toe doet. Of het is een afleidingsmanoeuvre omdat ze er ook niet uitkomen. Echter, je kunt heel stoer en ernstig over kinderarbeid praten en likkebaardende convenanten sluiten, het wordt wel omhooggehouden door een verzonnen werkelijkheid. Frappant is dat de SER niet zegt: ‘er is wel degelijk kinderarbeid want…’. Ontluisterend.

Ik verneem van een betrouwbare bron uit India dat D.H., onderzoeker van het rapport ‘The Dark Sites Of Granite’, door LIW naar India is gestuurd om achteraf bewijzen te verzamelen wegens de aanhoudende kritiek. Door dit nieuws heeft LIW het zich zeer lastig gemaakt want nu dient D.H. ook een datumbewijs te leveren. Volgens de bron is LIW bezig met antidateren. India is hét land van fake-kinderarbeid en deze industrie is gigantisch omdat lokale ngo’s al meer dan 25 jaar weten dat ze hiermee geld en internationale mensenrechtenprijzen verdienen. Een goed maandinkomen in India ligt tussen de 100 en 200 euro. Als een Europeaan met een koffer geld langskomt dan gaat de Indiër niet zeggen dat er geen kinderarbeid is. Naast een datumbewijs moet LIW een wetenschappelijk bewijs hebben dat kinderarbeid niet in scène gezet is, een echtheidsbewijs.

Glocal Research verdedigt zijn onderzoek maar met zoveel Engelstalige spelfouten dat je al twijfelt aan hun kwaliteit van onderzoek. Ze schrijven: ‘In most cases, the research team was not able to collect documentary evidence (paper documents, photographs, audio or videos) as supporting evidence for oral interviews as most respondents were hesistant and unwilling.‘ Dit haalt de betrouwbaarheid en validiteit compleet onderuit. Over de vermeende kinderen in de mijnen: ‘Age verification documents were not available.’ Dit is mondeling en op zicht gebeurd, zonder foto’s. Glocal Research linkt bedrijven aan westerse bedrijven middels indirecte bewijsvoering door te melden dat ‘black galaxy’ maar op één plaats in de wereld gevonden kan worden en indien deze westerse bedrijven dit verkopen dat dan de cirkel rond is. Het is niet duidelijk of mensen binnen een neutrale setting en zonder suggestieve vragen zijn ondervraagd. Ik heb de ervaring dat er vooraf al een schimmige sfeer is en dat de geïnterviewden allang weten wat de interviewers willen horen. Vaak leidt dit ook tot een goede maaltijd, luxueuze snacks & drinks of wat geld. Exportdata van drie Indiase havens tonen inderdaad een relatie tussen Indiase mijnen en Nederlandse bedrijven. Meer hard bewijs is er niet. Het enige dat Glocal Research kan stellen is dat er door gesprekken met derden een vermoeden bestaat dat er sprake is van kinderarbeid maar dat dit niet met zekerheid te zeggen is. En daarmee kun je dus wetenschappelijk niks vaststellen. Maar ja, wie of wat is Glocal Research? Ik heb geen idee.

LIW publiceert het rapport ‘Labour Without Liberty‘ waarin 12 textielbedrijven worden besmeurd op grond van dezelfde statistische meet- en redenatiefouten. Decathlon is één van hen en ze schrijven aan NL-Aid dat ze passende maatregelen hebben genomen. Het is wonderbaarlijk te noemen dat LIW niet leert van de situatie waarin ze zich bevinden door met hetzelfde amateuristisch gepriegel in de media te schreeuwen.

Gerard Oonk: vluchtgedrag?

Gerard Oonk, directeur van de LIW, zet zijn functie als vacature uit. Onder het kopje ‘taken en verantwoordelijkheden’ staat: Bewaken van de kwaliteit van publicaties, met name onderzoeken. Op zich logisch, Oonk is van 1948. Naast Gerard Oonk en de ‘Medewerker Mensenrechten en Bedrijfsleven’ gaat er nog iemand weg. LIW heeft vijf betaalde werknemers.

Wiebe Bijker

Interviews zijn leuk voor een roman, niet voor sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Dit geeft meteen de ziekte van de Nederlandse ontwikkelingssamenwerking weer want overheidsorganen vragen niet door, stellen geen vragen ten aanzien van waarheidsvinding en dientengevolge stellen ook geen wetenschappelijke eisen ten aanzien van waarheidsvinding. De genoemde kamerleden en minister namen alles maar voor lief aan.

Wiebe Bijker

Het absolute dieptepunt is de evaluatie geleid door hoogleraar Wiebe Bijker die samen met 200 onderzoekers in 2015 circa 8.000 pagina’s schreven en ontwikkelingssamenwerking als effectief en efficiënt bestempelde. De 200 onderzoekers kwamen niet verder dan interviews en er werden geen enkele onaangekondigde steekproeven gehouden om de track record en output van lokale ngo’s te testen. Indien je bij lokale ngo’s geen proeve houdt ten aanzien van hun track record en de output van hun lopende projecten, dan ben je bezig met het uitschrijven van een theatervoorstelling. Met 200 onderzoekers had Bijker keihard de lokale ngo’s kunnen testen, maar Bijker meed confrontatie en koos voor een zachte landing. Als hoogleraar technologie en maatschappij aan de Universiteit Maastricht begeleidde Bijker louter en alleen kwalitatieve scripties en onderzoeken (=waarheidsvinding gebaseerd op interviews) en zijn eerste kwantitatieve onderzoek (=waarheidsvinding gebaseerd op harde bewijzen waaronder onaangekondigde steekproeven) moet nog op zijn cv komen. Je kunt ook stellen dat met de casting van Bijker de overheid in gebreke is gebleven. Jammer want dit was dé gelegenheid om aan iedereen te laten zien hoe je wel gedegen ‘wetenschappelijk’ onderzoek behoort te doen. Nu doet Gerard Oonk, Wiebe Bijker gewoon na. Kennelijk zijn ambtenaren en politici, met schijnreden en zonder wetenschappelijke waarheidsvinding, gewoonweg makkelijk te overtuigen.

Ten Slotte

Scoren met kinderarbeid is makkelijk omdat je daarmee op een eenvoudige manier ontzettend veel media-aandacht inkoopt. Vooraf weet je al dat je met het begrip ‘kinderarbeid’ eenvoudig kunt oogsten. Het is zwaar discriminerend om gewin te halen uit de term ‘kinderarbeid’ zonder dat het begrip een vorm heeft. Het begrip ‘kinderarbeid’ wordt dan uitgebuit.

Welke denkfouten horen bij wetenschappelijke aannames (ook wel ‘valse aannames’)?

1. Ten onrechte aannemen dat er geen andere legitieme wetenschappelijke theorieën zijn die aannames vervangen. Een voorbeeld. In het geval van LIW die voornamelijk interviews houden, kun je je afvragen of de respondenten geïmponeerd zijn door een rijke westerse onderzoeker die heel overdreven veel aandacht heeft voor een bepaald onderwerp? Indien Bill Gates een Nederlandse alleenstaande en werkloze moeder thuis opzoekt en een ernstige setting creëert met veel vragen over haar armoede, dan kun je van tevoren al invullen wat haar antwoorden zullen worden. En al helemaal indien je van tevoren Bill Gates en het onderwerp van zijn vragen aankondigt;

2. Feiten verkeerd interpreteren zodat deze in een dominante theorie past. Als je eenmaal ‘iets’ als ‘waar’ hebt aanvaard dan ontstaat er valkuil. Men wordt objectief/wetenschappelijk lui. Alle argumenten die deze waarheid eventueel zouden kunnen ondersteunen zijn ‘waar’ en behoeven niet meer te worden getoetst. Een ernstig gevolg van deze gedachtefout is dat het aanvaarden van een aanname eigenlijk heel gemakkelijker gaat, maar dat het weerleggen van die aanname enorm lastig is. Een voorbeeld. Radio1, 19 mei 2016: Terre Des Hommes beweert dat er in India 20.000 kinderen in micamijnen werken terwijl zij aan NL-Aid hebben aangegeven dat ze niet weten hoe ze aan dit cijfer zijn gekomen. Zij hadden van deze 20.000 werkende kinderen niet één bewijs van een werkend kind. Ik kon ze niet van het beeld afbrengen dat het dan niet waar kan zijn. De dominante theorie verdrukt de waarheidsvinding. Er waren nul bewijzen en een onverklaarbaar getal nodig om een megacampagne te starten met collectanten langs alle Nederlandse deuren die heilig geloofden in de dominante theorie.

3. Intens geloven dat iets waar is omdat het breed gedragen wordt door andere steekhouders zodat zij elkaar bevestigen. Binnen de gehele Nederlandse ontwikkelingssamenwerking is dit een wijdverspreid probleem. Zij nemen elkanders data en verhalen over zonder aan waarheidsvinding te doen. Oorzaak van dit verschijnsel is ‘framing’. In de bibliotheek van Utrecht ligt de trap naar boven naast de lift. Wat opviel is dat mensen massaal de lift nemen, ook al moesten ze minutenlang wachten totdat de deur open ging. Toen ze vanaf de ingang rode voetstappen op de vloer hadden geschilderd richting en over de trap naar boven, namen mensen massaal de trap. Dit is wat LIW ook doet: voetstappen in een bepaalde richting plaatsen zodat mensen een richting ingaan zonder af te vragen waarom ze dit doen. Een ondersteunend voorbeeld is de houding van de SER en de Tweede Kamerleden in dit verhaal, die de voetsporen van LIW blind volgen. Ze worden zo misleid door ‘framing’ dat waarheidsvinding niet eens in hen opkomt. Wat volgt is papegaaien van de ene actant naar de andere actant zodat het uiteindelijke niet meer te ontwortelen is;

Gezichten op Mars: een optische illusie

4. Pareidolie is een psychisch verschijnsel waarbij ons brein continu naar herkenningspunten en verbanden zoekt, ook waar die er niet zijn. Te denken valt aan grafische beelden in wolken of silhouetten van gesteenten op de planeet Mars (zie foto). Op de manier ontstaan ook complottheorieën. LIW interviewt mensen over een gevoelig onderwerp en dan is ineens alles wat ze zeggen waar zonder dat er harde bewijzen zijn. Indiase ngo’s zijn er meester in om hierop in te spelen. Ze laten één werkend kind zien, dat veelal van te voren is geoefend en in scène gezet en spreken dan over getallen in de tienduizenden. De interviewers zijn dan prooi voor pareidolie, want dat ene kind maakt dan plotseling een connectie met tienduizenden phantomkinderen die niet bestaan. Emotie wint van waarheidsvinding. Geen enkele overheidsinstantie of universiteit stelt de juiste vragen. Criticasters worden, zonder plichtsbesef rondom rede en bewijs, weggehoond.

5. Wanneer je als enige toegang hebt tot bepaalde onderzoeksbronnen kan er een gevoel van alleenrecht op een ‘waarheid’ ontstaan die niet getoetst kan worden door anderen. Sterker nog, anderen worden afgesloten van deze onderzoeksbronnen teneinde dit alleenrecht van eigenaarschap te pantseren. Wetenschap is het ‘geheel’ van kennis op een bepaald gebied. Het afschermen van dit ‘geheel’ dwarsboomt inspraak en inzichten en dit is nogal heerszuchtig. LIW kan dit zeker worden verweten.

Al deze denkfouten zijn op LIW van toepassing. Voorts is LIW verblind door de begrippen ‘false negatives’ en ‘false positives’ en hebben deze in hun onderzoek niet kunnen neutraliseren of weerleggen. Gemakshalve verwijs ik naar een theoretisch kader inclusief een video hieronder.

Ik durf stellig te weren dat kinderarbeid niet bestaat in de omvang en ernstigheid als sommige westerse hulporganisaties beweren, omdat zij dan door de jaren heen dan met gemak dit aan de kaak had kunnen stellen met keihard bewijzen in plaats van met gekochte foto’s van geposeerde kinderen (want ook dit heeft LIW gedaan). Ik heb in India voornamelijk in elkaar geknutselde kinderarbeid gezien, maar daar moet je wel doorheen weten te prikken. De drang om fake-kinderarbeid te aanvaarden is zo groots dat je blind bent voor waarheidsvinding. Het bestaansrecht van LIW wordt mede ontleend aan kinderarbeid dus het motief om slordig met waarheidsvinding om te gaan lijkt daarmee geboren.

De LIW, de IOB, de SER en de Tweede Kamerleden zijn onderdeel van de Nederlandse ontwikkelingssamenwerking. Ze worden gefinancierd door belastinggelden. De IOB, de SER en de Tweede Kamerleden doen wel ‘stoer’ mee als ze er voordeel van hebben maar geven niet thuis als je enkele vragen stelt.

Theoretisch kader: ‘false negatives’ en ‘false positives’

De genoemde begrippen komen uit de medische wereld waarin met regelmaat verkeerde diagnoses worden gesteld aan de hand van vermoedelijke of zogenaamde onomstotelijke signalen of symptomen, bijvoorbeeld een valse diagnose voor zwangerschap. Dit is zeker van toepassing op de onderzoeken uitgevoerd door LIW omdat daar helemaal geen bewijzen ten grondslag van aannames liggen en diagnoses helemaal niet gesteld hadden mogen worden. Indien LIW een ziekenhuis zou zijn geweest dan zou de overheid deze allang hebben gesloten en hen niet, zoals nu, een stoel aan allerlei onderhandelingstafels aanbieden. Derhalve blijkt ook de casting van LIW door de overheid een voorbeeld van ‘false-positive psychology’ want geen van de genoemde actoren heeft iets zinnigs kunnen meedelen over bewijzen ten aanzien van gepubliceerde diagnoses. Kortom, ook zij hebben geen enkel bewijs gezien (zie ook denkfout 3 van hierboven).

Op 4 oktober publiceert LIW een rectificatie (http://www.indianet.nl/rectification-TheDarkSitesOfGranite.html) waarin Antolini Luigi & C S.p.A en Edwards Slate & Stone niet langer genoemd worden als inkoper van groeve 3 (verwijderingen van pagina’s 20, 43, 45, 47, 48, 49, 50 en 52). De exportdata die LIW heeft ontvangen bevatten geen bewijs voor een relatie tussen deze twee bedrijven en groeve 3.

Intussen heeft NL-Aid de onderzoekers uit India, te weten Rapolu Saidulu, Ravi Raj en P. Kranthi Kumar zoals genoemd in het rapport, kritisch bevraagd over de echtheid van kinderarbeid dat in het rapport wordt gemeld. Via Internet zijn de onderzoekers niet te linken aan een instantie. Het rapport van LIW noemt Glocal Research maar ook dat is niet te traceren op Internet. De onderzoekers worden in het onderzoeksrapport tevens niet voorgesteld en dat geeft weinig legitimiteit aan het geheel. NL-Aid ontving van de Indiase onderzoekers geen reply.

Het rapport noemt de namen van de Nederlandse onderzoekers niet, maar het betreffen D.H. van LIW en H.P. van het FNV. Ook aan hen zijn enkele kritische vragen overlegd over de juistheid van kinderarbeid en ook hier ontving NL-Aid geen enkele reactie. Dit is vreemd. Indien er keihard bewijs is dan reageer je gedreven en werk je mee. Binnen de wetten van sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek betekent dit, op dit moment, dat de inhoud van het rapport geen waarde heeft. Een hypothese is namelijk niet ‘waar’ indien je iets beweert, een hypothese is wetenschappelijk ‘waar’ indien deze wordt bewezen.

Het rapport bevat gekochte foto’s van commerciële websites om de lezer een bepaalde impressie te geven. De getoonde foto’s hebben niks te maken met de inhoud van het onderzoek. Door dit in een westers onderzoek ten aanzien van waarheidsvinding te publiceren, maak je binnen de wetten van sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoeken, een catastrofale denkfout.

Organisaties zoals LIW mogen niet zomaar de vrijheid nemen om kinderarbeid op te roepen, daar bedrijven aan linken en dit publiceren. Zij zijn geen overheid. Juist bij overheid kan een burger zich beroepen op de WOB om de inhoud op juistheid te taxeren. Overheden, universiteiten en erkende onderzoeksbureaus publiceren aan de hand van data die zij bewijzen. Deze is opvraagbaar, misschien niet door elke burger, maar zeker door bepaalde groepen in de samenleving. Zodoende houden we elkaar scherp. LIW lapt alles aan de laars, beweert maar toont geen bewijzen, ook niet als daar naar gevraagd wordt. Dit zegt voldoende over de juistheid van het rapport. Indien LIW bewijzen heeft voor het genoemde rapport, is er geen enkel motief te verzinnen om te kiezen voor radiostilte. Dientengevolge lijkt het reëel te veronderstellen dat ze inmiddels geconcludeerd hebben in India misleid te zijn.

Ngo-rescue

1. In het artikel De Landelijke India Werkgroep verzint Kinderarbeid worden tien dwalingen genoemd die geneutraliseerd dienen te worden. In elk onderzoek dient iedere dwaling apart te worden geneutraliseerd. In het voorbeeld van LIW kan ik stellen dat zij al jaren weten dat in India kinderarbeid in scène wordt gezet en deze zorg is niet geneutraliseerd.
2. De bewijzen dienen aantoonbaar hard te zijn, middels onaangekondigde steekproeven. De meeste audits worden aangekondigd waardoor de onderzochte partij zich kan voorbereiden en verhalen op elkaar kan afstemmen, veelal wetende wat de onderzoekers willen zien en horen. Positieve steekproeven behoren ook verslagen en gepubliceerd te worden.
3. Wetenschappelijk bewijs maakt bij voorkeur gebruik van triangulatie, bewijsvoering van drie kanten. Bijvoorbeeld: een steekproef, een boekhoudkundige controle en foto’s. Een interview over output met iemand die ‘leeft’ van die output, kan niet aangevoerd worden als bewijs. Daarmee vallen interviews met lokale ngo’s af. Zij mogen wel ‘beweren’ maar diens track record en output (dat zijn twee verschillende dingen) dienen dan wel met een steekproef te worden gecontroleerd.
4. Bij een boekhoudkundige controle dienen eveneens steekproeven te worden ondernomen op de juistheid van de bonnen/facturen, ook op basis van triangulatie.
5. Op basis van wetenschappelijk waterdichte steekproeven dienen generalistische uitspraken gedaan te worden. Dit is de vastgestelde hypothese. Deze kan alleen ontkracht worden door een antithese.
6. Bewijzen dienen navolgbaar te zijn, controleerbaar door derden. In het voorbeeld van LIW dienen de gegevens van kinderen te worden gearchiveerd (naam, social security number, foto, adres, etc) zodat bijvoorbeeld een journalist als steekproef meerdere kinderen thuis kan opzoeken. Niet geopenbaarde bewijzen betekent in de wetenschap hetzelfde als: ‘geen hypothese’.
7. Onderzoekers dienen voorgesteld te worden als individu, met status van dienst en repertoire. Het is prima dat zij in naam van een organisatie werken. In het voorbeeld van LIW is het compleet duister wie de Indiase onderzoekers zijn en wat hun achtergrond is.
8. Aan de tegenpartij van een onderzoek dient te allen tijde de volledige bewijslast te worden overhandigd waarna zij in alle redelijkheid en billijkheid de tijd krijgen om een antithese te vormen. In het voorbeeld van LIW weten de genoemde bedrijven niet eens in welke mijnen of groeves er kinderarbeid waargenomen zouden zijn. Zij kunnen zich daardoor niet eens verdedigen middels een antithese. Je mag een hypothese niet in beton gieten door de antithese op voorhand te dwarsbomen, zoals LIW doet. Het doel van een hypothese is juist dat deze openstaat voor een antithese, anders bedrijf je geen wetenschap maar indoctrinatie.
9. De westerse ngo heeft als doel om steekproeven te nemen en deze, positief of negatief, te publiceren. Zij zijn niet alleen op zoek naar negatief nieuws omdat je dan vooringenomen gaat onderzoeken met suggestieve voorbereidingen en dito vraagstellingen. Zij hebben ook niet als doel om aan iedereen te tonen welke media-aandacht zij hebben verworven omdat daarmee de valkuil opengaat dat het om aandacht gaat. Je toont daar dan mee dat een onderzoek ten koste is gegaan van neutraliteit en met name ten koste van objectiviteit.
10. De westerse ngo is wars van radiostilte, omarmt kritische vragen en staat open voor onwaarheden in het rapport. Zij willen niet zozeer hun waarheid in stand houden maar zij zijn op zoek naar de objectieve waarheid. Zij zien journalisten en criticasters als een middel om alles scherp te krijgen, te verfijnen. Niet alleen bij zichzelf maar ook bij de samenleving. Bij LIW heb ik dit niet getroffen. Als voorbeeld kan ik geven dat LIW niet communiceert op doodeenvoudige vragen als: ‘Hebben jullie voor het rapport The Dark Side Of Granite daadwerkelijk kinderarbeid gezien?’ Als je zulke basale vragen al niet kunt/wilt beantwoorden kun je concluderen dat, zolang dit voortduurt, er überhaupt geen harde uitspraken over kinderarbeid gedaan kunnen worden.

Ten slotte

Om te voorkomen dat je als westerse ngo in diskrediet komt is de top-10 van ngo-rescue van eminent belang. Overigens geldt de top-10 voor alle westerse ngo’s.

Het zou mij niet verbazen dat, in navolging van Antolini Luigi & C S.p.A en Edwards Slate & Stone, ook de overige genoemde bedrijven in het rapport van LIW zich beraden welke juridische stappen ze jegens LIW gaan ondernemen.

NL-Aid provides evidence of Hitler’s suicide, confirming the reasoning of Trevor-Roper (British Intelligence and historian), dentist Blaschke, witness and editor Bezymenski and pathologist Sognnaes.

In 2009, Hitler’s so-called skull was examined by the University of Connecticut and DNA analysis and bone’s identity proved it belonged to a woman, aged 20 to 40. The main question is: was Hitler’s suicide a cover-up or are the researchers deceived as dabblers by a false skull? NL-Aid examined previous evidence from National Archives and Universities all over the world, in particular dental records. As a backup, the collected documents have been examined and analysed by a Dutch dentist (who likes to stay anonymous). I will present all the details of this historical dental and pathological evidence which, for the first time in history, are published all together. These are rare documents from world’s darkest crypts. Hopefully, this will end all hoaxes and conspiracy theories.

Bellantoni and Strausbaugh

Nicholas Bellantoni and Linda Strausbaugh, dealing with DNA analyses of Hitler’s skull as seen in History Channel’s documentary Hitler’s Escape, concluded that Hitler’s suicide had some loose ends. According to The Guardian ‘the world is still in the dark about what really happened in Hitler’s bunker on 30 April 1945’. There is no correlation between DNA results and Hitler’s escape. The remains of Hitler have been a tug-of-war by the Russians, perhaps causing historical disorder about his whereabouts. So, I asked Bellantoni and Strausbaugh if they could have been deceived with the wrong skull.

BELLANTONI: “As Dr. Strausbaugh has stated, we are in agreement that Hitler died in the bunker. The cranial vault fragment in question was recovered a full year (May 1946) after the initial discoveries of the bodies (May 1945). As we say in archaeology, “context” is everything. The context had been destroyed in waiting over a year to return to Berlin. The mandible that was sent to Moscow in 1945 is, I believe, that of Hitler. The cranial vault is someone else.”

This is reassuring, but this is not expressed in the content or title of Hitler’s Escape. The documentary ends with:

BELLANTONI: “We’re going to change everybody’s perception, of not only his remains but what maybe happened to Eva, Hitler and others in that bunker. If this is not Hitler, who is it and as a result of that we’ve got a lot more homework to do.”

The fact remains that History Channel made a documentary with a “worthless” piece of skull, resulting in an unnecessary documentary with an embroiled effect.  Let me show the hard evidence proving Hitler’s suicide once and for all.

Preamble

Several researchers contributed to the evidence of Hitler’s suicide. They are chronologically discussed. For convenience, I refer to the time-table at the bottom of the article.

Bezymenski

Bezymenskiĭ

Lev Bezymenski’s (or Bezymenskiĭ’s) description of Hitler’s autopsy by the Soviets and Hitler’s remains are published in Der Tod des Adolf Hitler (The death of Adolf Hitler; unknown documents from Soviet archives) (download Here, 62 Mb).

The book is a witness report and therefore worth reading in its entirety. Bezymenski also describes the last days in the bunker, as shown in the movie Der Untergang. Of course, the Soviet perspective is highlighted. The book opens with several witness reports, for example by Harry Mengeshausen at 13^th May 1945 (one of Hitler’s bodyguards). The entire procedure (the carrying out of Hitler’s and Braun’s corpses, their cremation and the burial) was observed from a distance of 600 meters on April 30. He also attested that, on April 29, Hitler’s dog also was buried in the crater. On investigating the places, Mengeshausen had indicated, his deposition was found to be correct. There is also a passage about how Hitler’s corpse is found by Ivan Churakov in the presence of Bezymenski. Besides similar witness reports, the book includes several detailed anatomical/pathological determinations, autopsy reports and an extensive cause of death. I’ll limit myself to quoting some significant dental observations.

i. Striking passages (page 44-57)

‘The text of the final and most important autopsy report (documents Nos. 12 and 13) are reproduced verbatim, in the following, either in their entirety or in somewhat abbreviated form.’

(The dental codes are Palmer Notations)

‘In the upper jaw there are nine teeth connected by a bridge of yellow metal (gold). The bridge is anchored by pins on the second left and the second right incisor. This bridge consists of 4 upper incisors (A), 2 canine teeth (B), the first left bicuspid (C), and the first and second right bicuspids (D), as indicated in the sketch. The first left incisor (E) consists of a white platelet, with cracks and a black spot in the porcelain (enamel) at the bottom. This platelet is inset into the visible side of the metal (gold) tooth. The second incisor, the canine tooth, and the left bicuspid, as well as the first and second incisors and the first bicuspid on the right, are the usual porcelain (enamel) dental plates, their posterior parts fastened to the bridge. The right canine tooth is fully capped by yellow metal (gold). The maxillary bridge is vertically sawed off behind the second left bicuspid (F). The lower jawbone lies loose in the singed oral cavity. The alveolar processes are broken in the back and have ragged edges. The front surface and the lower edge of the mandibula are scorched. On the front surface the charred prongs of dental roots are recognizable. The lower jaw consists of fifteen teeth, ten of which are artificial. The incisors (G) and the first right bicuspid (H) are natural, exhibiting considerable wear on the masticating surface and considerably exposed necks. The dental enamel has a bluish shimmer and a dirty yellow coloration around the necks. The teeth to the left (I) are artificial, of yellow metal (gold), and consists of a bridge of gold crowns. The bridge is fastened to the third, the fifth (in the bridge, the sixth tooth), and the eight tooth (in the bridge, the ninth tooth). The second bicuspid to the right (J) is topped by a crown of yellow metal (gold) which is linked to the right canine tooth by an arching plate. Part of the masticating surface and the posterior surface of the right canine tooth is capped by a yellow metal (gold) plate as part of the bridge. The first right molar is artificial, white, and secured by a gold clip connected with the bridge of the second bicuspid and the right incisor.’

‘According to the record of the interrogation of Frau Käthe Heusermann it may be presumed that the teeth as well as the bridge described in the document are those of Chancellor Hitler.’ (see photo of Heusermann’s sketch).

‘Frau Heusermann and Echtmann (dental technician, NL-Aid) were interrogated by me separately. I was assisted by Major Bystrov. In answer to my question Käthe Heusermann and Fritz Echtmann described Hitler’s teeth from memory in minute detail. Their information about bridges, crowns, and fillings corresponded precisely with the entries in the medical history and with the X-ray pictures that we had found. Next we asked them to identify the jawbones which had been taken from the male corpse. Frau Heusermann and Echtmann recognized them unequivocally as those of Adolf Hitler.’

‘Crucial part of the interrogation of Frau Heusermann on May 10:

• Question: Can you establish from the dental bridges that they belong to Hitler?
• Answer: Yes, there is no doubt of it.
• Question: We have shown you the dental bridge of an upper jaw and a lower jaw with teeth. Do you know to whom these teeth belong?
• Answer: The teeth shown to me belong to the German Chancellor Adolf Hitler. The upper jaw on the left, behind the fourth tooth, exhibits a distinct trace which occurred when the gold bridge was sawed by the dental drill, at the time of the extraction of the sixth tooth. This extraction was performed by Professor Blaschke with my assistance in the Autumn…
  All further evidence that these bridges are Adolf Hitler’s tallies with those named by me before from memory, with the exception on the fourth lower right tooth, which I believed to be an artificial porcelain tooth. But the teeth you have shown me prove that this tooth is a natural one.
• Question: Can you affirm that the teeth shown to you are Adolf Hitler’s teeth?
• Answer: Yes, I affirm that the teeth shown to me are Adolf Hitler’s teeth.’

‘The dental technician Fritz Echtmann confirmed Frau Heusermann’s statement on May 11.’

‘I even started to argue with her, because I had overlooked one detail when examining the teeth and had miscounted the steel pins. She turned out to be right.’

‘Frau Heusermann repeated everything again in detail and declared categorically that the prosthesis I had shown her was in fact Hitler’s dental prosthesis. The picture was clear beyond doubt, for Frau Heusermann as well as for me as forensic expert.’

ii. Striking passage

The following passage does not support my reasoning, but it is too specific to skip: ‘The left testicle could not be found either in the scrotum or on the spermatic cord inside the inguinal canal, nor in the small pelvis.’

Dr. Hugo Blaschke

Blaschke

Hugo Johannes Blaschke (1881-1959), Adolf Hitler’s personal dentist from 1933 to April 1945. Blaschke’s Final Interrogation Report (download full interrogation with more sketches HERE) describes the characteristics of Hitler’s teeth (and of Eva Braun and Martin Bormann). This interrogation document has never been published ever before. Here are some examples of Hitler’s set of teeth.

‘This is a view of the Upper Jaw, seen frontally, as it would appear if all artificial elements except fillings were removed.’

‘Lower Jaw, seen frontally.’

‘Lower Jaw, seen from the back.’

‘Lower Jaw, seen from above.’

‘This is a view of the Lower Jaw, seen frontally, as it would appear if all artificial elements except fillings were removed.’

The interrogators conclude: ‘Blaschke had furnished a rather hasty and incomplete description of Hitler’s teeth. (…) The description on which the present report is based is the only one he made with the aid of the X-ray photo’s. (…) It can, therefore, be considered authentic and accurate.’

Hugh Trevor-Roper

Trevor-Roper

British intelligence officer and Oxford professor Dr. H.R. Trevor-Roper published his book The Last Days of Hitler in 1947. Only the last chapter deals with Hitler’s death and because the book is still sold on a commercial basis (ISBN 0 330 49060 5), this is the only document I haven’t scanned. I will quote some passages instead.

Trevor-Roper wrote a qualitative study by interviewing the last survivor’s of the Führerbunker. He was ordered by the British intelligence to investigate the circumstances of Adolf Hitler’s death in November 1945. He wrote a chronological story, a piece of detective work, rather than writing out the interviews. Unfortunately, this is less scientific but Trevor-Roper gives a good picture of the final days in the Führerbunker. One fine example is a segment about the motives of Hitler’s suicide: ‘Captured by partisans during the general uprising of northern Italy, Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci had been executed, and their bodies suspended by the feet in the market place of Milan to be beaten and pelted by the vindictive crowd. If the full details were ever known to them, Hitler and Eva Braun could only have repeated the orders they had already given: their bodies were to be destroyed ‘so that nothing remains’; ‘I will not fall into the hands of an enemy who requires a new spectacle to divert his hysterical masses’. (…) Hitler went into a frenzy, shouting: “This will never happen to me!” ’

Hitler’s personal servant Heinz Linge tried to minimize witnesses of the final scène by ordering most people to leave the Chancellery. From the book, I abstracted the following people who witnessed Hitler’s death firsthand:

1. Joseph Goebbels; Reich Minister of Propaganda; died on 1 May 1945.
2. Martin Bormann; head of the Party Chancellery and private secretary to Hitler; died on 2 May 1945.
3. Arthur Axmann; head of the Hitler Youth; died on 24 October 1996.
4. Heinz Linge; SS Officer, valet for Hitler; died on 9 March 1980.
5. Otto Guensche; Sturmbannführer (major) in the Waffen-SS and a member of 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler before he became Hitler’s personal adjutant; died on 2 October 2003; Bezymenski and Trevor-Roper both write about Guensche the fact that Guensche put the corpses on fire (respectively page 50-51 and 180 of their own book).
6. Wilhelm Burgdorf; German general; died on 2 May 1945.
7. Erich Kempka; SS-Obersturmbannführer and Hitler’s chauffeur; died on 24 January 1975.

About the cremation of Hitler and Braun: three unauthorized police guards witnessed from which it was intended to exclude them: Erich Mansfeld, Hermann Karnau, Hans Hofbeck. I could not find any details about them. Their stories are briefly described. Bezymenski also wrote about casual bystander Mengeshausen.

It is not clear which of these aforementioned Nazis (only those in bold formatting, because the other ones died in 1945, Mengeshausen was a Soviet witness) have been interviewed by Trevor-Roper. A missed opportunity, though I could trace an indication that he mainly interviewed Erich Kempka.

Trevor-Roper organizes the final developments of Hitler’s last henchmen. There is even a list of people who attended the event in the Bunker (22 April to 1 May); what their duties were and when they left. The book has no pathological evidence and consequently does not support the dental records. But in the context of our quest, only the following passages give details about Hitler’s suicide.

Striking passages (chapter seven)

‘A single shot was heard. After an interval they entered the suite. Hitler was lying on the sofa, which was soaked with blood. He had shot himself through the mounth. Eva Braun was also on the sofa, als dead. A revolver was by her side, but she had not used it; she had swallowed poison. The time was half past three.’

‘Outside, in the bunker, another ceremony was being prepared: the Viking funeral.’

Karnau watched the burning corpses for a moment. They are easily recognizable, though Hitler’s head was smashed. (…) Karnau: “It is sad that none of the officers seems to worry about the Fuehrer’s body. I am proud that I alone know where he is.”

‘These bones have never been found.’ (In 1947 Trevor-Ropes had no knowledge of Bezymenski’s report, NL-Aid).

Reidar Fauske Sognnaes

Reidar Fauske Sognnaes (1911-1984), Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Boston. Sognnaes was a forensic scientist and credited because he disproved the theory that President George Washington had wooden teeth. Sognnaes published two research reports about Hitler’s remains through examinating classified files from USA and Russia.

Sognnaes did a literary detective with the existing files of Bezymenski and Blaschke in 1977. Sognnaes classifies and organizes these facts in a clear manner. The Russians destroyed Hitler’s body in 1970.

ad 1. Striking passages

‘X-rays of Hitler were taken during late 1944 and uncovered in early 1972.’

‘In 1968 the Russian writer Lev Bezymenski published in West Germany a book entitled Der Tod des Adolf Hitler (The Death of Adolf Hitler). Bezumenski’s book carried the subtitle Unknown documents from Soviet archives. Thus, twenty-three years after the event, Soviet sources finally permitted disclosure of details of the autopsy with various dental and medical data on the death of Adolf Hitler as well as Eva Braun, Goebbels and his family.’ (details are outlined in attached document)

‘Heuserman, the chair-side dental assistance of Hitler’s dentist, Blaschke was interrogated in a talk with the Soviet Chief Expert of Forensic Medicine, Lieutenant Colonel Shkaravski on May 11 1945, in the Office of CAFS No. 496. Frau Heuserman described the state of Hitler’s teeth in every detail.’

‘One of the most important exhibits recovered from Soviet Archives concerns the objective photographic evidence illustrating the remains of the dentition of the corpse described in autopsy document Bo. 12. Included were photographs of a fixed dental prosthesis, namely, a 9-unit bridge, and the charred fragment of a mandible, the latter with several intact anterior teeth and two bridges, one on the right and one on the left side.’

‘The Final Interrogation Report of Blaschke: As a preamble to the interrogation report regarding Hitler’s dentistry, there is said to be three reasons for the report, namely, to provide (a) data useful in the identification of Hitler or his remains, (b) information to expose what might be future fraud, and (c) research material for the historian, the doctor and the scientist.’

‘The five X-ray plates attached are copies of originals found among Dr. Morell’s records. They have been positively identified by him as well as by Dr. Giesing as X-ray taken from Hitler. (…) This was during the period when Dr. Giesing was treating Hitler for ear injuring suffered at the time of the assassination attempt on 20 Jul 44.’ (All five X-ray plates are shown in the attached document with explanations and conclusions (page 60-63))

‘In comparing the five X-ray plates located in the U.S. National Archives, several principal observations emerge, which are considered of major significance in correlating subjective and objective evidence regarding the odontological identification of Hitler. Firstly, it became clear that Hitler had only four remaining teeth which were not involved in either bridging a gap or supporting a bridge between adjacent teeth. (…) Secondly, the X-rays indicate that the maxillary right central incisor and left lateral incisor, while completely opaque to the X-ray beam, do show short metallic posts for insertion into the root canals. (…) Thirdly, the X-rays show a very peculiar and very unusual dental bridge construction on the right lingual aspect of the mandible. (…) Fourthly, the X-rays show that the left maxillary incisor has the very characteristic feature of a partially opaque or metallic crown, typical of the now outmoded, but in times past, not infrequently uses, window-crown.’

‘After careful study of the various types of descriptive, diagrammatic and photographic evidence had been prepared with a view to summarizing what, in our judgment, represented the dental status of Adolf Hitler.’

‘From the overall comparison of the odontological evidence (Tables 1A and B, page 67-68) we conclude that the individual identified by means of the 1945 Hitler files located in the U.S. National Archives in 1972, is the same person as that whose 1945 autopsy report was published in 1968 on the basis of the previously unknown documents from Soviet Archives of 1945.’

ad 2. Striking passages

This document is an extensive repetition of document i, with the same evidence and conclusions. On page 199-200 Sognnaes writes: ‘Reappraisal of all documentary data – discounting legends, myths and speculations – now provides definite odontologic proof that Hitler did indeed die during the Berlin collapse of the Nazi dictatorship in 1945, and that the Russians did in fact recover and autopsy the body of the real Hitler.’

Independent comparison by a Dutch dentist

The documents of Bezymenski, Blaschke and Sognnaes are brought to the attention of an independent Dutch dentist with modern knowledge and technical insight of the world today (2012). The dentist writes:

“Hitler was a slob. He brushed his teeth insufficiently, causing bad teeth and bad breath. He had periodontal gum disease and as a result, he had many typical reconstructions.

Some things in Bezymenski’s research (and therefore also in Sognnaes’s work) are wrong and these arise from sloppy work. This can be explained by the fact that during the actual autopsy no dentist was present. We also have to put the whole story in a post war context: total social disorder and consequently hasty work of destroyed remains. Dentist Blaschke drew the teeth by heart in 1946. However, there are plenty of features from both documents which have a strong match.

Unusual is the metal arch in the right lower jaw (mentioned in Blaschke’s and Bezymenski’s/Sognnaes’ articles). Another parallel is the ‘cut’ surface in the left maxillary, indicating the cutting of a bridge portion (the element is then removed). A considerable bridge construction in the maxilla used to be normal, in particular with gold. Left below, there is a long bridge with three pillars, the middle pillar migrated backwards. There are some inconsistencies on this last fact.

The key features are:

• mandible: deviant feature of the metal arch bridge and the large bridge left below;
• upper jaw: main distinct feature of the cut bridge left. This is more common, but in combination with the (types of) crowns, this is really typical.

As a whole, it is plausible to assume that Blaschke and Bezymenski are talking about the same remains. Sognnaes confirms these findings. About Heusermann’s sketch: the amount of elements which are complemented by crown/bridge, are correct. ”

Findings and conclusions

I conclude that, despite hoaxes and conspiracy theories, Hitler indeed committed suicide. This was also reported by German witnesses. However, the last of Hitler’s henchmen were the most fanatic Nazis. Not a reliable source. Hitler’s skull does or did exist, but the Russian Archives simply gave the researches of the University of Connecticuta a different one. The Seduction was born. Formal errors sometimes lead to cardinal differences in outcomes. This is the power of The Seduction.

One fact is still unclear to me: where in Russia are the remains of Hitler? The official story goes that everything was burned. If this is true, the Russians destroyed the body without any explanation. This was not just a crime investigation, it was in fact the most important historical crime evidence of the last 2000 years. The study of Sognnaes is somewhat messy and the Russians should have known that some of the crucial components would become important. What for? In 1944, the purpose of DNA was discovered by Oswald Avery. He describes personal characteristics by storing information in cells. Yet 100 years earlier, DNA was discovered by Friedrich Meis Cher, a Swiss chemist. He labelled phosphorus-rich compound in cells (later called deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA). At that time, it was not known what it did. In 1953, the so-called spiral staircase was described by Watson and Crick. Sognnaes did his research in 1977. By that time, scientists could read DNA. The question remains: why did the Russians not preserve any of the crucial evidence from crime scene number 1 of the last two thousand years?

I could find one missing link. Sognnaes claims ‘Then, in 1972, archives in Washington released five X-rays of Hitler’s head, taken on July 20, 1944.’ But Bezymenski writes in 1968 about the morning on May 9 1945: ‘Wasting no time in the clinic, we drove to the Chancellery, taking Käthe Heusermann along. Here we went down to the basement, found Professor Blaschke’s dental office, and with Käthe Heusermann’s assistance soon discovered X-ray photographs of the Führer’s teeth and a few gold crowns that had been prepared, but time to put them to use run out on dentist and patient (page 54)’. They contradict each other.

• 1968: book by Lev Bezymenski containing a description of how Hitler is found by the Sovjets and his autopsy. Also mentioned are the investigations about Hitler’s dog, Eva Braun and the Goebbels family: Joseph and Magda, 5 daughters and 1 son. Although the book is published in 1968, the witness reports cover a period starting in the bunker when Hitler is still alive, the findings of his remains on May 4 and the following autopsy. (*)
• 1970: Hitler’s remains are completely incinerated and disposed of so that no parts or portions could be used to raise Hitler to the status of martyrdom.
• 1972: archives in Washington released five X-rays of Hitler’s head, taken on July 20, 1944 because he suffered his ear after the bomb attack on his life. (*)

1. Bezymenski: Born in 1920 in Kazan. Studied philosophy in Moscow and entered the Soviet Armed Forces in 1941, first as a private and later as an officer in Stalingrad, Kursk and Berlin. An excellent scholar of German, he served as interpreter at the hearings of General Paulus, the German field marschal who surrended to the Russians after the Battle of Stalingrad. As a member of Marschall Zhukov’s staff, he participated in the Battle of Berlin. In 1946 he became co-editor of Novoe Vremia, a journal on foreign affairs. In this capacity he made various trips abroad, producing numerous articles on current events which were published throughout the Eastern countries. In 1968 the Russians finally admitted having the remains of Hitler. They permitted disclosure of details of the autopsy with various dental and medical data on the death of Hitler, Braun, Goebbels, Krebs and two dogs.

2. Hugo Johannes Blaschke (1881-1959): He was interrogated by the Americans after the war about Hitler’s dental treatment in the hope that this would lead to the identification of his remains. He stated that he fitted a large dental bridge to Hitler’s upper jaw in 1933 and that on 10 November 1944 he carried out surgery to cut off part of the bridge due to a gum infection that was causing Hitler severe toothache. In May 1945 Soviet officers showed a dental bridge to Blaschke’s technician Fritz Echtmann and his dental assistant Käthe Heusermann and they both identified it as being Hitler’s. Blaschke also reconstructed the dental records of Martin Bormann from memory and these were later used to identify his skeletal remains which were discovered in Berlin in 1972. 3. Trevor-Roper. The first exhaustive investigation of the last days of Hitler was undertaken by the Oxford professor Dr. H.R. Trevor-Roper in 1945. The British Intelligence authorities in Germany in September of that year had given him the task to collect all available evidence on the last days of Hitler and to determine, if possible, the truth about his appearance or demise.

4. Reidar Fauske Sognnaes (1911-1984): Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, founding Dean of the UCLA School of Dentistry and scholar in the field of oral pathology. He is credited with identifying the remains of Adolf Hitler and Martin Bormann, through examination of classified American and Soviet dental record. 6. The Guardian: Tests on skull fragment cast doubt on Adolf Hitler suicide story

Unknown to the world, Hitler’s corpse was interred at a Smersh centre in Magdeburg, East Germany. There it remained long after Stalin’s death in 1953. Finally, in 1970, the KGB dug up the corpse, cremated it and secretly scattered the ashes in a river. Only the jawbone, the skull fragment and the bloodstained sofa segments were preserved in the deep archives of Soviet intelligence. The bunker was destroyed in 1947 and eventually paved over. Then, in 2000, the Russian State Archive in Moscow staged an exhibition, The Agony of the Third Reich. The skull fragment was displayed, but only photographs of Hitler’s jawbone were on view. The head of the archive, Sergei Mironenko, said he had no doubt the skull fragment was authentic. “It is not just some bone we found in the street, but a fragment of a skull that was found in a hole where Hitler’s body had been buried,” he said.
