Operation (Thank God) Not Kidney Failure: Osama Bin Laden Dead

Osama Bin Laden is dead… So what!

Bin Laden has long ceased to be anything more than a symbolic figure to the hundreds of terrorist groups operating compartmentally throughout the world. Regional terrorist leaders often conducted operations without seeking sanction from Bin Laden. In fact, they have often embraced ideas far too extremist than Bin Laden’s; Zarqawi for instance flouted Bin Laden and Zawahiri’s directive not to ignite a civil war in Iraq by targeting Shiia and non-complying sunnis. We all know that he’d done just the opposite. When Zawahiri was killed in a U.S. air strike ordered by no other than the hard corps but so unsavory General Stanley McChrystal, his successor was not named by Bin Laden.

His death hardly signifies that Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and elsewhere in the world will cease to operate. It has been established that terrorist cells working independently from one another and from Al Qaeda have announced their allegiance to Bin Laden solely as a recruiting tool. His death does not serve a strategic or military objective; it satisfies an inflated egocentric sense of revenge rather than justice. And of course, it is a great political campaigning tool.

According to President Obama ‘speech, the operation was coordinated and deconflicted with the Pakistani government. Bin Laden was killed during a firefight with U.S. black ops operatives. I find it difficult to believe that after years of a modus operandi revolving solely on UAV attacks against Al Qaeda leadership, the U.S. suddenly opted for a small team of special ops guys – reportedly CIA paramilitary and SEALs – to fast rope into Bin Laden’s compound, engage in a forty-minute firefight, kill the target and extricate unscathed retrieving his body as incontrovertible proof to the success of the operation. What’s more! Bin Laden’s compound was in a swanky neighborhood known mostly for its retired Pakistani generals and government officials in Abbottabad. The Pakistani ISI, who were instrumental to the rise of Taliban in 1996 and who literally controlled Afghanistan by proxy until Pervez Musharaf was forced to resign in August 2008, facilitated Bin Laden’s escape from the mountains of Tora Bora in December of 2001according to some observers. U.S. special operations forces and British SAS were denied permission to take out Bin Laden when they overtook the cave complex where he had been hiding. The official story of his escape states that he crossed into Pakistan on a mule; a 6’4” distinctively looking Arab with serious medical issues eluded highly trained U.S. special forces and British SAS, spying UAVs, Pakistani border and military patrols, and the Pakistani secret service by riding a meandering mule into the safety of Abbottabad where he purchased a high profile compound neighboring the homes of notable Pakistani officials some of whom were undoubtedly connected to the country’s intelligence apparatus; he employed hundreds of loyal armed guards that looked like they could be Pakistanis; he remained in Pakistan for ten years recording threatening audio messages and filming the occasional stroll in the woods for Al Jazeera.

Now that Bin Laden is dead, the dollar is up, Obama’s popularity in these dire economic times will soar, the country morale will brighten in response to the emotional closure the news provides. It will certainly positively affect next year’s elections for the Democrats. It is the prelude to U.S. drawdown from Afghanistan, a major campaign issue in 2012.

I was wondering when the final act of this intriguing thriller would play out. It would have been lame if Obama announced, instead of a spying operation that culminated in a daring military operation conducted by valiant military and paramilitary operative, that Bin Laden died in his sleep subsequent to a kidney failure or complications from his type II diabetes. That would totally lack the dramatic twist a ten year long war, thousands of military casualties, and billions of dollars expenditure demand. There has not been, nor will there be a better time for Osama Bin Laden to be announced dead as a result of a military/CIA operation than now.
